Between Mouth and Ear
Between Mouth and Ear considers how time materializes through repetition and sedimentation. Five latex cast mouths hold sand that trickles through each pair of lips and into the mouth below, eventually piling onto and eventually obscuring a wax cast ear resting atop a mound of sand. The work traces a fragile exchange between speaking and listening, where communication is transformed into accumulation, residue, and eventual obstruction. What begins as a measured flow gradually alters the system itself as the gentle swaying of the elements causes the flow to at times become interrupted. As time runs its course, the sand depletes itself as the ear becomes increasingly buried. The sand acts as both marker and agent of change, recording the passage of time while simultaneously silencing the exchange. The resulting form remains as evidence of a process that can only be temporary, a quiet record of transmission, erosion, and the inevitable limits of connection.
